Transfusion Medicine Hackathon

Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine – India Chapter, Innovation Centre, MAHE and Department of Transfusion Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal are launching the Blood Donation Hackathon on 28th February 2022. We encourage interdisciplinary teams to address key problems in Blood Donation.

What is a hackathon?

Hackathon is a powerful tool to spur creativity and innovation where an interdisciplinary team of health, technology and management experts work collaboratively to solve a common problem


  • To trigger the process of creative ideation in transfusion medicine
  • To develop innovative solutions to the stated practical problems in transfusion medicine

Problem Statements:

  1. Recruitment strategies for mobilizing first-time voluntary donors to keep the donor pool expanding
  2. New strategies for retention of blood donors to maintain the donor pool
  3. Novel techniques for reduction of donor reaction to sustain donor pool
  4. Approaches to improve mobilization of female blood donors
  5. Creative methods for the upliftment of donation experience at blood center/outdoor level

Eligibility Criteria and Rules:

  • Open to all healthcare workers, Undergraduate and postgraduate students, NGOs Teams need to be of 3-5 members
  • One member should become the team leader Each student or faculty can only be in one team.
  • Teams are free to recruit members from other institutes and disciplines.
  • The registered team can choose any one problem statement (mentioned above) of their choice
  • The title and description (100 words) of the idea should be mentioned during registration
  • One team can propose only one idea

Mentoring Session:

While registering, the team can mention if they need assistance in finding mentors. Details of the mentors will be sent through email. You may contact them to clarify your doubts regarding the subject matter. Mentors will not be part of the team.

Phase 1 (Ideation Phase)

There cannot be a change in team members once registered

The content of the slides should be as described below:

Slide 1: Your idea; Names of team members

Slide 2: What is the problem? Who is affected by this problem?

Slide 3: How do you plan to solve this problem?

Slide 4: How will you implement your Idea?


A multidisciplinary team consisting of a subject expert in transfusion medicine, innovation officer, biomedical and design engineer will be the judges.

Relevance, novelty, and feasibility of the idea will be the criteria for selection to phase 2 at the discretion of judges.

Shortlisted teams for phase 2 will be communicated via email

Phase 2 (Prototype phase)

Shortlisted teams will need to develop the prototype of their idea

Each team can avail seed money up to INR 10,000 for the development of their prototype that will be reimbursed later.

Demonstration of prototype and defense by the team via the virtual platform (5 min presentation and 5 min Q & A session).

Announcement of the best 3 prototypes will be done by the Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine

Winners will receive the exciting cash prize (1st prize; 25,000/-, 2nd Prize; 15,000/-, 3rd Prize; 10,000)

The decision of the Organizers on all matters relating to the Hackathon, including the eligibility of Participants and the selection of the winners, is final and no correspondence will be entertained.

Ensure that you and your team have obtained any consents, approvals, or licenses required for you to submit your Entry and that your Entry will not violate anyone else’s rights or the law (if applicable).

Intellectual Property Rights

Your submission and all components thereof must:

  1. be your (or your Team) original work product
  2. be solely owned by you or your Team with no other person or entity having any right or interest in it
  3. Not violate the intellectual property rights or other rights, including but not limited to the copyright, trademark, patent, contract, and/or privacy rights, of any other person or entity
  • By entering the Hackathon you represent, warrant, and agree that your Submission meets these requirements and Hackathon Administration will be not obliged to answer or legally bound
  • The innovation done by the registered team will be safe. Utmost confidentiality will be upheld by the organizers.
  • As the jury will be a closed group, no project details will be in any of the open platforms and your idea will be secure.
